Treasure of the Silver Lake

After our first stop in Zagreb we drove south to a place I was really looking forward to: the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This national park is the largest in Croatia, and one of the oldest in Europe. It is well know for its cascading lakes and its beautiful waterfalls – and for its appearance in movies. Scenes from the movie “Treasure of the Silver Lake” (based on the book by Karl May) were shot there. So if some pictures feel familiar to you, that’s maybe you have seen the movie… Croatia in general is a well-known place for film productions but more in the some of the next posts!

The Plitvice National Park is not comparable to national parks in Austria or some other countries. It’s more a kind of nature amusement park… First of all, you have to pay quite high entrance fee (approx. EUR 25) which includes unlimited boat and train rides. Yes, boat and train rides! There are several shuttle stations where you can either take a boat or panoramic train to skip parts of the trails.

Since we heard that the national park were more than crowded during the summer holidays, we got up early and started at 8:00 am when the park opened. We decided to take the long tour, and it took us 5 hours to finish it – just in time before the real crowds arrived. If you plan on visit the Lakes as well, I can highly recommend starting as early as possible. It’s way more impressive if you can experience the nature in silence on your own…
