Walls of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was the most southern point of our travel to Croatia, and was definitely one of its highlight. George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this beautiful city, about which he said “those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik”. And Dubrovnik really deserves to be described as “the pearl of the Adriatic”, not only because the amazing old town is a UNESCO World Heritage.

But Dubrovnik also experienced hard times in the recent past. During the war in 1991, Dubrovnik was under artillery attacks for several months and 56% of its buildings were damaged to some degree. After the war, the Old Town was repaired according to UNESCO guidelines in the original style. Now, nothing reminds visitors about the shelling and Dubrovnik is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world.

Of course, the walls are one of Dubrovnik’s main attractions. They run almost 2km around the city and you have an amazing view from there! You can watch the people in the streets, or the kayaks near the coast. Last but not least, Dubrovnik and its walls have also been a popular filming site for Game Of Thrones as the city of King’s Landing.
